The Draper Manuscript Collection was given to the Wisconsin Historical Society in 1900. It covers a period of approximately 1755 to 1815 and the area referred to as the Trans-Allegheny West (parts of Alabama and Georgia, the western Carolinas, Virginia, the Ohio River valley, and parts of the Mississippi River valley). The collection is divided into 50 series and the series are divided into 491 volumes. The series are arranged by geographic areas, subjects, or by individuals. More than 90 libraries carry the complete set on microfilm (filmed in 1949 and again in the 1970s). There isn't one comprehensive index. The finding aid to start with is Josephine Harper's Guide to the Draper Manuscripts.
