AQ can be used as an add-on for PAF. PAF was derived from AQ, so AQ works with the same file format as and it does a bit more. Many users of PAF continue to use PAF, but use AQ to access supplemental features such as: syncs a PAF database with new.FamilySearch.org, fan charts, descendant drop-line charts, documentation (notes and sources) for pedigree charts, publish a family book, generate research log, search against the new FamilySearch indexed records, and much more.
