    Equipment & Facility Requirements

    Equipment & Facility Requirements

      Projector Needs:

      1. I bring my own projector unless one is already provided by the seminar.
      2. A table or cart for the projector, pointing toward the screen.
      3. An electrical outlet or extension cord for that projector.

      Computer & Internet Needs:

      1. I bring my own laptop, with surge protector.
      2. A podium (facing the audience) at which I can stand and use my laptop.
      3. Distance from podium to projector should be less than 40 feet.
      4. An electrical outlet and/or extension cord available for the laptop at the podium.
      5. A regular, analog telephone line (phone jack/extension) available for use at the podium. Be sure this phone line does NOT go through a PBX switch system. If necessary, with notice, I can bring approx. 500 feet of telephone extension cord with me.
      6. I use my own Internet account with Earthlink and dial a local phone number in your area. If there is no local dialup number for Earthlink in your area, I will need access to a local ISP. With notice, arrangements can be made in advance.
      7. I can use a network/T-1 line in a hotel or convention center only IF they promise to have someone on hand to help with setup or troubleshooting. I will need IP and DNS addresses, as well as any other logon ID numbers, passwords, etc., as required on their systems.

      Miscellaneous:

      1. Display screen to project the presentation upon.
      2. Microphone, preferably a "hands-free" lapel microphone.

      For an alternative, offline presentation:

      • For a limited selection of transparencies, an overhead projector is required.
      • For a larger selection of screen shots or pre-cached web sites, I can use my projector and laptop, but will need quite a bit of advance notice to prepare the material.
      • It would be helpful to know ahead of time what areas of research your group is interested in, in order to have appropriate transparencies, screen shots or pre-cached web pages ready for the presentation.

    Helpful Suggestions

    • Try to get a room with lights that can be dimmed, preferably to allow the attendees to view the display on the screen while also being able to read the handouts and make notes.
    • In order to reduce glare, particularly during the day, it is helpful if windows have shades or blinds that can be drawn. Rooms without skylights are also preferable for the same reason.
    • For all-day seminars, I have found that three classes, each approx. 1 hour 15 min. work well, followed by a fourth hour at the end of the day for questions and answers.
    • Allow for at least a 15-minute break between each class.
    • Allow for an hour or more for lunch, depending on the food arrangements.
    • The equipment used for the presentation utilizes several cords and cables that can present a safety hazard. Plan the location of the presenter's table so that a minimum number of people will walk near these cables. Have tape available to secure the cables to the floor or wallboards if possible.
    • Be sure to test the telephone line, the lighting and the projector ahead of time, preferably NOT the night before the class. Check these things a week or more in advance to be sure everything is available the day of the class.

    Book Sales

If your society/group agrees to provide volunteers to sell my books at the seminar, arrangements can be made to ship the books ahead of time. Please determine the number of attendees expected and supply me with this information 6 weeks prior to the seminar date. 10% of the book sales will be donated to your group.
