From the National Park Service. Located in Battery Park on the southern-most tip of Manhattan, Castle Garden was the arrival point of some eight million immigrants who entered New York harbor from 1855 to 1890. It was the Ellis Island of its day.

Before Ellis Island was opened, Castle Garden functioned as the first official immigration center in the United States as a collaboration between the State of New York and New York City. Information in the online database is taken from the original ships' manifests and provides occupation, age, sex, date of arrival, place of origin and ship name. Results of advanced searches require a fee-for-download.

These materials identify 604,596 persons who arrived in the Port of New York, 1846-1851, and the ships on which they arrived. Approximately 70 percent of the passenger records list Ireland as the native country.
