Alexandria Library - Oath of Allegiance in Virginia, 1862-1865
The Oath of Allegiance, also called a Loyalty Oath, was a document signed by persons during and after the Civil War to pledge loyalty and allegiance to the Union. Initially intended for employees of the Federal government and military personnel, the oath soon took several different forms and eventually extended to the state level. Employment and business ownership were then dependent on signed oaths. The database is a list of approximately 1,200 persons, many of whom were residents of Alexandria, who signed the Oath of Allegiance.

Index to NARA RG 21 M1648 - Three of the five rolls indexed were petitions filed by WW1 soldiers stationed at Camp Humphries, now Ft. Belvoir. Counties include Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, Prince William & Stafford and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas & Manassas Park.

This database covers a vast range of topics, including abolition, politics, religious themes, battle casualties, and the effects of the war on citizens, just to name a few. The service is provided by Proquest and available only to Tennessee residents.

Miller, Jr. Wedding dates, names of wives, and names/birth dates of children are included when available. For many soldiers, details beyond the Notes column are available at the library.
