In 1701 the area known as Mecklenburg was divided into the duchies of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Strelitz. In 1815, they were both elevated to a grand duchy. The Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin had the Baltic Sea to its north; Schleswig-Holstein, Hannover, and a small part of Mecklenburg-Strelitz to its east; Brandenburg to its south; and Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Pommern to its east. Today it is part of the modern German state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Learn more: FamilySearch Wiki - Mecklenburg-Schwerin and GenWiki - Mecklenburg-Schwerin
