    Ancestry.com: The Basics

    Ancestry.com - General

    The Databases

Searching Ancestry's databases is free, and then viewing the final results in the genealogical datasets is available by paid subscription. A search serves up a "Ranked Search Result" based on your query. The displayed list of results indicates which of the many databases has a possible match, as well as suggestions to help you refine your search. Following the links for the search hits will result in one of two things: if you are already a paid subscriber you will see the database matches right away; if you are not yet a subscriber you are pointed to a "landing page" that gives you options to become a paid subscriber to one of Ancestry's membership packages.

    Family Trees

    • Ancestry.com - Search Family Tree Records
Published genealogies, electronic files containing genealogical lineage, and other compiled sources.
      • Ancestry World Tree  ~ FREE
Nearly 400 million names in family trees submitted by users.
      • OneWorldTree
OneWorldTree gathers family trees submitted by Ancestry members and family history records for millions of people, analyzes the birth, death and marriage data and then displays the most probable matches for your ancestors.
      • Personal Member Trees  ~ FREE
Contains family trees submitted to Ancestry by users who have indicated that their tree can only be viewed by Ancestry members to whom they have granted permission to see their tree.
      • Public Member Trees
Contains family trees submitted to Ancestry by users who have indicated that their tree can be viewed by all Ancestry members.
    • Family Tree Tutorial
A walk-through using the different family tree building tools at Ancestry.com.
