The specific aim of the Bureau is to locate and preserve archives, manuscripts and other unpublished or semi-published material through microfilm. It is interested in gathering material of historical, literary, or scientific interest to Pacific scholars which may be of value either now or in the future. Of particular concern to the Bureau are those documents at risk either from adverse climactic conditions, insect infestation, or civil unrest. It is also interested in preserving material deteriorating as a result of age or poor storage. Microfilming older at-risk records has been the moving force of the Bureau.

Trust Territory Archives Photograph Collection
The Trust Territory Archives Photograph Collection is a unique resource of 50,000 photographs and 2,000 slides that documents the history of the American period in Micronesia (1947-1988), and includes invaluable visual representations of island cultures. Much of this material was salvaged from the former Trust Territory Headquarters on Saipan, and owes its very existence to the persistence of former Trust Territory Archivist Sam McPhetres and his team, who were engaged in microfilming the files of the American administration.
