- The "Black MURRAYs" of Warrawang and their Decendants
Because of their descent from an Indian (Kerala) mother, Contetty and a Scottish father, Lt/Col Matthew Murray, the younger children did not inherit their father's estate but rather they were bypassed and it flowed to a Scottish-born half-brother. Consequently, James Murray migrated to New South Wales with his wife, Wilhelmine Reid and children. In New South Wales, Murray became a squatter, and his sons and daughters became significant pioneers of the Australian pastoral frontier. Because of their Indian ancestry they were known as the "Black Murrays". This site traces their history and records their story and identifies their many descendants. This family became significant in the racial conflicts in Queensland, between the indigenous people and the graziers, because 3 of the sons of James Murray served in the Queensland Native Police. Some of the daughters married either legal professionals or squatters and thus also became influential in colonial Australia.
