The National Archives of Scotland based in Edinburgh, has one of the most varied collection of archives in the British Isles. It is the main archive for sources on the history of Scotland as a separate kingdom, her role in the British Isles and the links between Scotland and many other countries over the centuries. The NAS holds records spanning the 12th to the 21st centuries, touching on virtually every aspect of Scottish life.
Mailing lists are interactive e-mail forums that are free for you to subscribe to and participate in. WEST-MARCHES Mailing List For anyone with a genealogical or historical interest in the West Marches administrative area in the south of Scotland and north of England (most of the historic Scottish counties of Roxburghshire, Selkirkshire, Dumfriesshire, Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire and the historic English counties of Cumberland and Westmorland) in order to air cross-boundary movements and assist researchers who are uncertain of the precise location of their forebears. The West Marches started c1100 and ceased to exist on the Union of the English and Scottish Crowns in 1603.

The Old Parish Registers (OPR's) comprise the records of births & baptisms, banns & marriages and deaths & burials kept by individual parishes of the Established Church (Church of Scotland) before the introduction of civil registration in 1855.
