Board for Certification of Genealogists
Certification of genealogists in the United States is a program of stringent examinations administered by the independent, standard-setting Board for Certification of Genealogists, established 1964 in Washington D.C. The BCG web site offers a directory of genealogists who hold Board certification, details on the examination process, and numerous educational articles.

The Genealogical Proof Standard
Applications for certification are judged on whether they meet the standards delineated in the BCG Genealogical Standards Manual. All of its seventy-four standards contribute to the level of credibility in genealogy called the Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS). As a result, genealogists who are certified have demonstrated their ability to do work that meets the GPS.

ICAPGen - International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogists
An accreditation program designed to test an individual’s competence in genealogical research was developed by the Family History Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the mid-1960s. In 2000, the Family History Department transferred their sponsorship of the Accreditation Program to the International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogists (ICAPGen).
