      Oy vey! The online portion of the Maryland Archives is certainly hard to wade through. But it's well worth the effort for family history work, as there are some wonderful sets of data here. Some, like 'Early Settlers' date back to the 1600's.

      There's something not quite right when the online state archives for Illinois can only rustle up 42 documents on Abraham Lincoln. Still, the archives have some valuable collections for family history research. There are muster rolls here from the Civil War, town directories, old newspaper archives, and a scary looking clown. Do check it out.

      Ancestry.com is great, but the hefty fee it charges is not for everyone. There are oodles of excellent free resources for genealogical research. Even if you use Ancestry regularly, the free searches can turn up additional information that can really surprise you.

      Florida has some of the oldest European settlements in the US, and the records to prove it.
